Becerra Leads in California Gubernatorial Primary Poll

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra is gaining traction in the upcoming primary. A recent Emerson College Poll reveals he leads with 28% of the vote. Behind him are Tom Steyer with 22% and Steve Hilton with 21%.

Xavier Becerra benefits from support among key groups. He has 44% backing from Democrats, and 36% among both Hispanics and women. In the Republican camp, Steve Hilton garners 59% of their vote, overshadowing Chad Bianco, who has 29%.

California’s primary system advances the top two candidates, regardless of party affiliation, to a general election in November. This structure benefits candidates like Becerra, with broad support across diverse groups, but also keeps the field competitive for others like Hilton and Steyer.

The poll indicates that 75% of likely voters remain committed to their candidate, though 25% remain uncertain. Becerra appears as a strong candidate, attracting 28% of undecided voters, while Hilton and Steyer each receive 23%.

The poll surveyed 1,000 potential voters from May 27 to May 28. Becerra’s support rose by nine percentage points since the early May poll. Steyer and Hilton experienced increases of five and four percentage points, respectively. Chad Bianco saw a one-point gain, while both Matt Mahan and Katie Porter experienced declines.
