Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Rourke Returns to Lead Team to Victory

Rourke Shines in a Triumphant Return

Friday marked a jubilant occasion for Lincoln-Way West’s Reese Rourke. After missing nearly an entire season, she made a stellar comeback. In her second game back, she hit two home runs, propelling her team to a historic victory. This was not just a dream for the senior shortstop; it was her reality.

“After the first one, I cried a little bit,” Rourke said. “I was just so happy. After the second one, it was pure joy.”

Her elation was evident when the Warriors secured a 2-1 win against Lockport in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way West Sectional championship held in New Lenox. As an NC State recruit, Rourke achieved a flawless performance, hitting 3-for-3 with two home runs and a double, contributing significantly to Lincoln-Way West’s 27-7 record. Teammate Paige Seivert added two hits, and Abby Brueggmann achieved the pitching victory.

Impressive Performances on Both Sides

Reese Rourke (21) exhibited her skills by catching a fly ball during the game. Taylor Lane led Lockport (24-13-1) with three hits, while Giavanna DiCiolla chipped in with an RBI single. Bridget Faut kept the game competitive with four strikeouts.

The Warriors celebrated their first sectional title and are set to face Edwardsville at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Illinois Wesleyan Supersectional.

A Memorable Moment for Teammates and Coaches

Rourke’s first home run brought tears of joy to her teammates. “Oh, my goodness, we were just exploding in the dugout,” Brueggmann said. “Especially since it was Reese, after she started tearing up, we were so happy for her.

“Reese is the hardest worker I’ve ever met. She’s my best friend. We spend a lot of time together. I’m probably with her more than I’m with my family. This was great for her.”

A Journey of Resilience and Recovery

Rourke’s comeback story is remarkable. At the start of the season, she set multiple offensive team records but faced adversity in the second game when she fractured her right wrist. Surgery followed, limiting her play. Her return during the semifinal against Lincoln-Way Central saw a modest start, going 1-for-4 with a double.

Rourke’s determination never wavered. “I was like, ‘I don’t feel right, I don’t feel right,’” she said. Video analysis and visualization helped her regain form before her triumphant performance.

Her efforts translated into success on the field. After a double in the third, she sent another ball over the right field fence in the sixth, sealing a 2-0 lead. Brueggmann complemented Rourke’s performance by striking out three and stranding nine runners.

The irony of Rourke’s journey is not lost. Once the ace pitcher for the Warriors, she now excels at shortstop, thanks to Brueggmann’s prowess on the mound. “Oh, I want her there — I need her there,” Rourke admitted with a smile. “Abby really carries us on the mound. It’s indescribable.”

Emotional Response from the Coach

Coach Heather Novak felt emotional witnessing Rourke’s return to form after her injury. “My heart broke for her when she informed me about the injury,” Novak recalled. “You never would have known. She was mature, responsible, and supportive of her team.

“For her to have that moment to be the impact player she has always been … I’m just so happy for her.”
