Former NFL Defensive Tackle Walt Rock Passes Away at 84

Walt Rock, a former defensive tackle in the NFL who played for the San Francisco 49ers and Washington Redskins over 11 seasons, passed away on May 19 at the age of 84.

Early Career and Draft

In 1962, Rock gained recognition as an honorable mention All-American during his time at the University of Maryland. He excelled as an all-Atlantic Coast Conference guard and tackle. The San Francisco 49ers selected Rock with the 21st overall pick in the second round of the 1963 NFL Draft. He also received interest from the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC that same year but chose the NFL path.

NFL Tenure

Over the span of 11 seasons from 1963 to 1973, Rock played in 137 games. He showcased his skills by starting nearly every game at tackle for the final ten seasons. Rock earned selections to the Pro Bowl games in 1965 and 1966 while with San Francisco. In 1966, the Sporting News honored him as a first-team All-Pro.

Trade and Playoffs

In 1968, the San Francisco 49ers traded Rock to the Washington Redskins in exchange for a first-round draft pick. His first playoff appearance came in 1971. The following year, he contributed to the Redskins’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship, leading them to the Super Bowl. They ultimately lost to the Miami Dolphins. During the Super Bowl, Rock became the second player to compete in the event after attending the University of Maryland.

Career Transition and Later Life

Rock’s playing career ended in 1973 due to a series of ankle injuries. He transitioned to full-time work as the president and owner of Door Systems, Inc. in Virginia, a role he held alongside his NFL career.

Honors and Personal Life

In 1972, Rock was inducted into the inaugural class of the Elyria (Ohio) Sports Hall of Fame. His high school years were marked by notable achievements, including leading his basketball team at Elyria High School to an impressive record.

Rock is survived by his wife, Alice, three sisters, two children, Douglas and Chelsea, as well as eight grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
