New Star Wars Film Sees Strong Debut, Analyzing Box Office Trends

After a seven-year gap, the new Star Wars film, ‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu,’ returned to theaters. The movie brought in $82 million from 4,300 theaters across the U.S. and Canada over the weekend, as per studio estimates. The total is anticipated to reach $102 million domestically and $165 million globally by the end of the Memorial Day holiday.

This performance surpassed expectations for the film, which continues the Disney+ series ‘The Mandalorian.’ However, it aligns with the lower end of Disney-era Star Wars releases. It compares closely to ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ which earned $103 million during its four-day Memorial Day frame in 2018. Despite being a box office disappointment, ‘Solo’ had a production budget near $300 million, far exceeding the reported $165 million for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ (excluding marketing costs), making profitability more feasible.

While the movie received mixed to negative reviews from critics, earning a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore. Young male viewers under 13 years old rated it highly with an A CinemaScore and a perfect score on PostTrak. Parents also rated it five out of five. Directed by Jon Favreau, the film stars Pedro Pascal as the titular bounty hunter on a mission to save Jabba’s son, Rotta the Hutt, voiced by Jeremy Allen White.

‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ enjoys a unique standing because of its origins in streaming. It will eventually join Disney+, a platform that became available shortly before the release of the last Star Wars movie, ‘The Rise of Skywalker,’ in 2019. The Star Wars franchise is undergoing transformation under new leadership, which includes Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, a producer for this film, is stepping down after 13 years. This period of change raises questions about Star Wars’ current big-screen appeal and whether next year’s ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ featuring Ryan Gosling, will reinvigorate it. Strong audience feedback might drive positive word-of-mouth interest in the film over the next few weeks.

“The moviegoers rule,” noted Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore. “Audience reactions and scores from parents and kids suggest this film might have enduring success.”

In comparison, the horror film ‘Obsession’ experienced an unusual 30% increase in ticket sales during its second weekend, earning $22.4 million from 2,655 theaters. Positive social media buzz from younger viewers contributed significantly to this outcome. Focus Features, which acquired the microbudget film for about $15 million, projects a $28.2 million total by Monday, accumulating $58.5 million overall.

This unexpected growth positioned ‘Obsession’ in second-place, ahead of the ‘Michael’ biopic, which made $20 million over the weekend and leads with $782.4 million earned so far. Conversely, ‘Passenger’ appeared less favorably, grossing about $8.7 million at 2,534 locations, with expectations to reach $10.5 million over four days. It received poor ratings from both critics (44% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (B- CinemaScore).

Boots Riley’s film ‘I Love Boosters,’ featuring Keke Palmer and Demi Moore, debuted with $3.7 million. The Memorial Day weekend movie roster, including Neon’s satirical release, couldn’t rival the previous year’s record box office led by Disney’s live-action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ and ‘Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning.’ This year, the overall earnings for the four-day period are expected to be $211 million, a 36% decrease from last year’s $330 million, but significantly better than the 2024 Memorial Day weekend lows.
