Chris Robinson Faces Backlash for Halting ‘U.S.A.’ Chant at Black Crowes Concert

Chris Robinson, frontman of The Black Crowes, ignited controversy by stopping a ‘U.S.A.’ chant during a recent concert. His act of halting this patriotic chant has rekindled his long-standing reputation for being outspoken.

Despite claiming disinterest in politics, Robinson’s comments often address cultural issues. At a Tampa concert, the appearance of the band’s mascot as Uncle Sam triggered audience chants. Reports state Robinson replied, ‘Thanks for the geography lesson,’ adding, ‘I don’t know what you have to be so proud of right now.’

BLACK CROWES FACE BACKLASH AFTER CHRIS ROBINSON SHUTS DOWN U.S.A. CHANT AND CALLS FANS ‘IGNORANT’

This statement led to boos and even some attendees leaving. Video recordings show Robinson asserting, ‘Some of us have real faith. For those of you f—ing booing us, some of us are not afraid. And we most assuredly are not f—ing ignorant.’

Previously, Robinson emphasized to Mojo magazine his interest lies in poetry and art, not politics. Yet, he voiced knowledge of right and wrong, decrying current ambiguities.

Robinson, nearly 60, reflected on societal changes, stating, ‘I get it, their phone is their interest. I still go to bookstores and read books.’ He highlights this in his lyrics, emphasizing his roots in past decades. Rock ‘n’ rollers, to him, maintain their status as ‘outsiders, weirdos, freaks.’

The Black Crowes, formed in 1984 with his brother Rich, saw success in the ’90s. Though split in 2015, they reunited to tour for their tenth album, ‘A Pound of Feathers.’

In 2015, Robinson criticized artists’ obsession with image over music, stating, ‘What would the response be to our age of violence, anxiety & fear?’ He argued against assimilation and superficial messages in today’s music and cultural landscape.

Sunday’s comments spurred fans and critics to react online. One user on X questioned why concerts couldn’t be an escape from politics, while another expressed frustration at political statements during a performance.

However, some defended Robinson. One fan insisted, ‘It’s rock and roll. You’re supposed to be offended.’ Another added, ‘Chris can choose to say whatever he likes… and the audience can choose to leave.’

A response from The Black Crowes’ representative was not available.
