Russians Building a Temporary Community in Phuket Amid War

Thousands of Russians who left their homeland following the 2022 Ukraine invasion have established a community in Phuket, Thailand. This community has an uncertain future, with a sense of transience surrounding their lives.

Among these individuals is Ekaterina Mittsel. As she waits to pick up her daughter from school in Thailand’s heat, she reflects on her six-year-old’s busy schedule. Choir practice on Mondays; gymnastics on Tuesdays and Thursdays; Russian lessons on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These lessons are in preparation for a potential return to Russia. This preparation reflects the lingering uncertainty among many emigres.

Around 30,000 Russian emigres reside on Phuket, drawn by its calm atmosphere and affordability compared to places like Bali and Dubai. The island offers a setting that many find more welcoming than Europe.

Frequent Social Ties

Mittsel, aged 36, finds herself meeting friends more often in Phuket than in Moscow. The island features significant Russian cultural influences. Popular among Russians even before the conflict, Phuket hosts Russian saunas, grocery stores with ingredients from Russia, and direct flights by Aeroflot. Also, beachfront eateries serve traditional dishes like cold borscht. Even Russian performers have included Phuket in their tour schedules.
