Ukraine continues its intensive drone attacks on Russian territories, targeting vital infrastructure. On Sunday, these strikes set a significant oil refinery in southern Russia ablaze, resulting in at least two casualties. This escalation in attacks aims to reduce Russia’s financial resources, impacting its military operations.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Telegram that these strikes deplete Russia’s war resources, pushing towards peace. The Slavyansk-na-Kubani refinery, a key player in Russia’s oil export through the Black Sea, was heavily impacted by these actions. This site’s annual processing capacity is approximately 4 million tons of crude oil.
Additionally, the Yaroslavl region, around 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, reportedly faced attacks, although confirmation from Russian authorities remains pending. Local officials noted the temporary closure of roads and airports due to these incidents.
Ukraine’s strategy focuses on cutting off fuel supplies to Crimea, a region annexed by Russia in 2014, resulting in gasoline sales suspensions within Crimea. The energy crisis is the worst since the annexation, reflecting the ongoing pressure Ukraine is applying on Russian resources.
Russian President Vladimir Putin admitted to a “difficult period” for the country, although he did not directly link it to the Ukrainian strikes or fuel shortages. He emphasized that Russia would meet its social commitments and continue infrastructure development, including housing and roads.
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak mentioned reviewing fuel export agreements to ensure domestic supply needs are met. Fuel sales restrictions have been imposed in the Irkutsk region of Siberia, impacting consumer access.
Elsewhere, a Russian aerial bomb in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, killed two and injured 16, including children. Ukrainian drone strikes in Russia’s Belgorod region resulted in one death and another injury. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that it intercepted 213 Ukrainian drones overnight.
Despite suffering attacks, Russia launched 142 drones and eight missiles against Ukraine, with Ukrainian forces intercepting the majority. The ongoing conflict demonstrates escalating measures from both sides, each trying to outmaneuver the other in this prolonged conflict.
