Neal McDonough recently shared insights into a challenging period in his life and career. During an interview, the actor reminisced about his involvement in the Jimmy Stewart biopic, Jimmy, and a time when he feared his Hollywood career might be over.
McDonough explained, “What time is the bar open? That was generally my thought process back then.” He recounted being dismissed from a show for refusing to kiss a co-star. This led to a perception of him as excessively religious, prompting career difficulties. He described how this perception and subsequent job loss exacerbated his drinking habit, resulting in significant personal losses, including his home and cars.
Currently starring in Jimmy, which celebrates Stewart on what would have been his 118th birthday, McDonough recounted how his friend, actor Luke Perry, offered his home to McDonough’s family during their struggle, demonstrating a deep kindness.
The actor underwent a period of self-reflection and realized the need to serve a higher calling rather than focusing inwardly. His wife Ruve played a crucial role, offering tough love by making him choose between their relationship and alcohol. This ultimatum spurred McDonough to transform his life.
“It’s just a cold, hard fact that God gave me an amazing, incredible woman,” McDonough said. He credits Ruve as his “good luck charm,” helping him navigate through difficulties to a fulfilling life. Now, the couple successfully produces films together, with projects like Boon and The Warrant: Breaker’s Law.
Their relationship began in 2000 on the set of Band of Brothers, led to marriage in 2003, and they now have five children. McDonough expressed the significance of celebrating Stewart’s birthday this year, deepened by his immersion in Stewart’s world through the biopic.
Playing Stewart’s father and understanding the actor’s WWII experiences and career achievements provided McDonough with profound appreciation. He praised KJ Apa’s portrayal of Stewart and expressed gratitude for being part of the project. “I am one lucky and blessed dude to be part of it,” McDonough stated.
