California’s 7th Congressional District candidate and Sacramento City Councilmember Mai Vang is encountering controversy after videos showed her opting not to say the Pledge of Allegiance. These videos, surfacing over Memorial Day weekend, captured moments where Vang turned aside or remained silent during council meetings when the pledge was recited.
As recently as last Wednesday, Vang was seen with downcast eyes during the pledge. Serving on the Sacramento City Council since 2020, Vang has addressed her stance on the Pledge of Allegiance in the past. In a 2025 Facebook post, she stated that while she loves the country, she uses that moment to ground herself and reflect on the injustices both locally and globally.
“As much as I love this country, I use that moment to ground myself—to center our communities and remind myself of the injustices and harm that continue to affect so many, both locally and across the globe, under this nation’s influence,” Vang explained.
Vang continued urging people not to ignore these injustices, suggesting that current events aim to keep individuals complacent. She emphasized the need for resistance, support among loved ones, and dedication to fighting for equity and justice.
Vang is running against incumbent Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui, who has represented the district for over 20 years. She stands as part of a progressive wave challenging long-standing politicians, advocating for universal healthcare, heavier taxes on billionaires, and the abolition of ICE.
Political consultant Steve Maviglio labeled Vang’s actions as “completely disrespectful,” suggesting that patriotism involves participating in the Pledge of Allegiance regardless of agreement with all aspects of the country.
The primary election is scheduled for June 2. For further inquiries, contact associate editor Lindsay Kornick at Fox News Digital.
