Clint and Lisa Hartman Black’s Insights on Marriage and New Lifetime Movie

Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black have enjoyed a strong marriage for nearly 35 years. Their commitment began with a simple promise when they said “I do.” Lisa, known for her role in “Knots Landing,” and her husband Clint, a country music star, are teaming up for a new Lifetime film, When I Said I Do. This film draws inspiration from their 1999 duet and features Ali Corley, a widowed K-9 handler who discovers love again after losing her spouse in a line-of-duty tragedy. The couple serve as executive producers and make special appearances as themselves hosting a relationship podcast.

“When Clint wrote the song and asked me to join him, I was hesitant at first,” Lisa said. “But agreeing to it brought us so much success, from chart-topping hits to couples using it in weddings and vow renewals. It’s an honor.”

The couple met backstage on New Year’s Eve 1990 and married on October 20, 1991. They are parents to Lily Pearl Black, born in 2001. Lisa attributes their relationship’s success to communication. She emphasizes the importance of talking through issues and not going to bed angry. As Lisa explains, they never intend to hurt each other, but feelings can get hurt. Clear communication is essential for resolving misunderstandings.

In Clint’s memoir, Killin’ Time: My Life and Music, he discusses personal challenges, including four pregnancy losses before Lily’s birth. Despite these hardships, they supported each other to keep hope alive. Lisa humorously noted how they prioritized their decision to have a child, echoing, “It couldn’t happen fast enough.” Clint initially took off three years after Lily’s birth to focus on parenting, acknowledging this time as very special.

Lisa describes Clint as a solid, genuine person, emphasizing how their relationship is built on mutual understanding and respect. They share a deep friendship and laughter, even in the hardest times. Their family, including daughter Lily, is a close-knit unit, enjoying simple activities together.

Reflecting on their first meeting, Lisa said it felt cinematic, as if time slowed down. They were both established in their careers and values when they met, which quickly brought them together. Lisa highlights their initial connection, fondly recalling Clint’s humor and their alignment in values that made their relationship so strong.

While maintaining their professional and personal life balance, Clint and Lisa stress the importance of space to express feelings. Lisa concludes that this mutual respect and understanding over the years is why they remain together today.

When I Said I Do debuts May 23 at 8 p.m. and is streamable the following day.
