Recently, Maines used Instagram to launch a profanity-laden criticism of President Trump, accusing him of undermining democracy. Her post read, “Our democracy is disappearing right before our eyes. This fugly s— is using your gas money to pay the insurrectionists. But don’t worry about it. I’m sure posting selfies will fix everything.” Despite some support, she faced backlash for her comments.
A White House spokesperson responded by calling Maines a “despicable nobody” suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” This is not Maines’ first political controversy. In 2003, she infamously declared her shame that then-President George W. Bush was from Texas, which led to heated exchanges within the industry, notably with fellow singer Toby Keith.
Toby Keith and Maines previously clashed over his patriotic song, “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).” Maines criticized the song for making country music sound ignorant and for targeting an entire culture. Keith dismissed her comments, asserting Maines was “not a songwriter.” He even displayed a doctored photo of Maines with Saddam Hussein at his concerts.
