Russia’s Shadow Fleet Escalates Drone Campaign Across Europe

Russia’s shadow fleet has intensified its drone activities throughout Europe, focusing on surveillance of military locations and testing NATO’s air defenses. The International Institute for Strategic Studies reported the presence of 144 suspicious drones near vital sites in Germany, France, and the UK.

In a recent development, a commercial ship sank and its crew disappeared following a coordinated drone assault involving air and sea units near Bulgaria, a NATO member. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attributed the attack to Russia and cautioned about Moscow’s potential broader offensive plan. Another vessel within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone suffered substantial damage and was set ablaze.

“They likely used the Geran-4 aerial drone or the Maran surface vehicle for the strike,” explained Cameron Chell, founder of drone manufacturer Draganfly.

The incident took place approximately 70 nautical miles off the Bulgarian coast near Byala. It signifies a dangerous escalation that threatens the economic zone of a NATO member.

Ukrainian intelligence is currently investigating the attack’s circumstances. Zelenskyy reported that maritime and aerial drones were involved in the coordinated Russian strike, creating uncertainty in the region.

“The hybrid nature of the attack causes geopolitical chaos that could benefit Russia,” said Chell.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev confirmed that both aerial and maritime drones targeted commercial vessels within Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, terming it a gross breach of international law.

The vessel identified as Alfa Watan, suffered devastating structural damage before sinking with unknown cargo and crew number aboard. Salvage operations by Bulgarian Navy, Air Force, and Border Police are in progress.

“Using sophisticated equipment in a coordinated manner indicates a high level of planning,” Chell observed.

A second ship, ABLE, caught fire after being struck while transporting grain. All 18 crew members, experiencing varying degrees of injury, were evacuated.

Radev convened an emergency session, highlighting the uncertain origin of the drones, while warning about the conflict’s expansion.

The attacks hint at disruptions within crucial shipping routes and instilling fear among commercial operators, paralleling previous chaos seen in the Strait of Hormuz.

Recent incidents involve surges in attacks on commercial vessels across the Black Sea. A report by Ambrey indicates over 210 strikes within a few months.

In response, Zelenskyy alerted about Russia’s plans for massive assault preparations. He urged readiness and emphasized the importance of international political will to assist Ukraine.
