U.S. Officials Warn Against Travel to Djerba Amid Increased Threats

The U.S. Embassy in Tunisia has issued a travel alert for Djerba, a popular tourist island known for its picturesque beaches and resorts. This follows new threats coinciding with the anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks on Israel. Americans are advised to avoid visiting Djerba around this date.

In a statement, the embassy emphasized the need for vigilance, advising visitors to stay away from large crowds and be conscious of their surroundings. The embassy also suggested avoiding areas with a strong police presence and urged travelers to follow local media and maintain a low profile.

Wednesday marks the three-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attacks by Hamas on Israel. This event resulted in over 1,200 deaths and thousands more injuries, triggering the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The impacts of these events have been far-reaching, causing a spike in antisemitism globally. Djerba, home to a historic Jewish community, could be particularly affected. The island, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023, has witnessed Jewish settlement for nearly 2,000 years. According to the World Jewish Congress, thousands of Jewish visitors come to Djerba annually for the Lag B’Omer festival.

The U.S. State Department ranks Tunisia at “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.” Common crime, particularly in tourist zones, and violent crime are risks, especially after dark. Americans are advised against walking or driving at night.

Parts of Tunisia, notably near Libya and Algeria, are marked “Level 4: Do Not Travel” due to terrorism threats. The State Department warns that terrorist groups may attack without warning.
