D.C. Metro Plans Fare Changes for 2026

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority has put forward a proposal to adjust its fare structure for rail and bus services. This plan includes introducing free fares for young riders across the Washington D.C. region.

As it stands, rail fares are currently priced between $2.25 and $6.75, with costs varying based on trip length. Standard bus rides have a flat rate of $2.25, while express bus services come with higher charges.

If the proposal gains approval, these revised fares will be implemented in July. This change seeks to balance the costs of operation with providing accessible public transportation options.
