Technology’s Impact on Society: A Historical Perspective

Mark P. Mills, writing for City Journal, discusses how panic often accompanies technological advancements. Artificial intelligence, similar to past innovations, sparks both excitement and concern. This is not unique to our era but has roots in history.

In 1862, The Lancet analyzed the impact of railways on public health. The invention of railroads brought about railway accidents, reported enthusiastically by the media. However, these accidents were just the beginning of public anxiety.

At the time, experts issued warnings about the dangers of faster train speeds. They speculated that passengers could suffocate due to speed or that their vision might become impaired from observing rapidly passing scenery. There were also concerns that the human body could not withstand these high speeds.
