Washington Commanders Lose Another Quarterback to Injury

Quarterback Injuries Plague the Commanders

The Washington Commanders faced a challenging situation as their quarterback woes continued, this time during an international game. Marcus Mariota suffered a knee injury against the Indianapolis Colts, played at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London. This incident compounds their quarterback troubles after losing their starting quarterback, Jayden Daniels, to an earlier injury.

Details of Mariota’s Injury

Mariota was injured during a sack by Colts defensive lineman Laiatu Latu. The team initially listed him as questionable due to a right knee injury. However, he was ruled out after halftime. Dr. David Chao, a medical expert with experience as the chief doctor for the San Diego Chargers, suggested an MCL injury could be the issue for Mariota. Chao noted that despite opportunities to reintroduce Mariota with a brace, his absence raised concerns about the severity of the injury.

Mariota faced a similar injury in 2022, requiring surgery. His recent knee troubles are a setback, especially since he was starting in place of Jayden Daniels, who dislocated his left elbow on September 20 against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jayden Daniels and Team’s Future Plans

Daniels, previously sidelined, resumed practicing in a limited capacity. The Commanders hope for his return in their upcoming Week 5 game against the New York Giants. However, his absence in the current game has forced the team to rely on their third-string quarterback, Athan Kaliakmanis.

Enter Athan Kaliakmanis

Kaliakmanis, a rookie quarterback selected in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft, stepped in to replace Mariota. He played college football at Minnesota and Rutgers. The Commanders aim for Kaliakmanis to perform effectively under challenging circumstances as they navigate these injuries.
