Baseball is remembering Tommy John, a pioneer in the sport, following his passing at age 83. Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News senior medical analyst, paid tribute to John’s legacy and groundbreaking ulnar collateral ligament surgery. This procedure, now known as Tommy John Surgery, saved John’s career and changed sports medicine. Over 2,500 pitchers have since benefited from this surgery. Dr. Siegel also discussed Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s new child fitness and nutrition agenda.
Fans experienced a rare sight at Fenway Park during the Boston Red Sox’s 9-8 victory over the Seattle Mariners. In the third inning, Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle made an unusual play to record an out. Mariners’ Dominic Canzone hit a slow ground ball to the mound. Tolle, who stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 250 pounds, charged quickly to field it. Instead of tagging Canzone, Tolle hugged him to secure the out.
Tolle said, “It just kind of happened. I was right there in front of him, like, ‘Bring it in for the big one.’”
This encounter marked Tolle’s first meeting with Canzone. The pitcher is known among teammates for his friendly embraces. Trevor Story, Red Sox shortstop, remarked, “The guy gives hugs all the time. Payton’s just a special person.”
During the game, Tolle pitched 5 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and two walks, with six strikeouts. The Red Sox erased a three-run deficit in the later innings, winning on Trevor Story’s walk-off single. They aim to continue their success in the second game of the series against the Mariners.
