Unsealed Body Camera Footage Reveals Details of Manhunt and Arrest

Newly released police body camera footage, acquired by CBS News New York, reveals significant moments from the arrest of Luigi Mangione in Altoona, Pennsylvania. This marked the conclusion of a five-day manhunt after the 2024 fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Midtown hotel.

The video documents the police placing Mangione in handcuffs and includes the subsequent property search. This footage was presented during a suppression hearing in December 2025. Mangione’s defense argued that the search of his backpack violated his rights. Until now, this video had not been publicly viewed outside the courtroom.

In December 2024, police responded to a 911 call about a man, suspected to be the shooter, dining at a McDonald’s in Altoona. The body camera video shows officers questioning Mangione over a false driver’s license under the name ‘Mark Rosario.’ In the footage, Mangione later admits to lying about his identity.

The footage further shows officers taking Mangione to the police station, where a strip search was conducted. Investigators found a firearm in his backpack, later linked by prosecutors to the crime scene. A state judge decided that most evidence gathered during this search is admissible at trial.

Legal expert Richard Shorenstein noted that the officers in the footage did not seem concerned about safety, despite the prosecution’s claim that searching the backpack at McDonald’s was crucial for safety reasons.

Mangione confessed to federal charges involving interstate stalking resulting in death and stalking using interstate facilities resulting in death. He also faces charges of second-degree murder, weapons, and forgery. A previous first-degree murder charge was dismissed in his state trial last year.

Sentencing on federal charges is scheduled for December. The continuation of the state case remains under consideration.
