Rabbi Steve Leder, a technical advisor for Netflix’s ‘Nobody Wants This,’ addressed comments by series star Adam Brody, who stated Israel is committing ‘genocide’ in Gaza. Leder shared his thoughts in an Instagram video, critiquing Brody’s statement as ignorant.
“Hi Adam, you might not remember me. My name is Rabbi Steve Leder, and I served as the technical advisor for Season 1 of ‘Nobody Wants This,'” Leder began. “I ensured your character and the portrayal of Judaism were authentic.”
Leder expressed shock at Brody’s comments, describing them as a misuse of the term genocide. He emphasized that genocide is occurring in other parts of the world, not in Gaza.
Leder said, “Your pronouncement about a ‘genocide in Gaza’ was shocking. You misuse the word genocide. Ignorance was evident in your statement.”
Brody, featured as a rabbi in the series, had previously mentioned to GQ magazine that he sees Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocide. He stated, “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. I want a free Palestine. It’s awful, but I hope another administration can address these policies causing misery.”
Brody’s claims have garnered responses from other Jewish leaders. Rabbi Yaakov Menken of the Coalition for Jewish Values also called Brody’s statement ignorant, pointing out it unfairly demonizes Jews.
Menken commented, “Only a bigot would label efforts to free hostages as genocide. Ignorant Jews aren’t immune to hateful indoctrination.”
A spokesperson from the Israeli-American Council expressed disdain for Brody’s remarks, indicating such statements could incite violence against Jews. The council referenced an attempted terrorist attack on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, highlighting the daily threats faced by Israelis.
