The Chicago Blackhawks face a tight schedule as they gear up for the new season. Their training camp is shortened, making efficiency crucial. With the season opener set for September 29 in Las Vegas, the team focuses on building chemistry and shedding any rust quickly.
Among the key players is Roman Kantserov, a rookie winger. The 22-year-old from Russia is making an impact with his proactive approach. He is keen on establishing strong on-ice relationships and communicates frequently with teammates, especially with Patrick Kane and Frank Nazar.
“If Coach is talking about how we play our drills, if I don’t understand, I just ask and they help me,” Kantserov said. “Like power play, with Patrick with how I need to support him, how I can play with the other guys. I like this. It’s a new opportunity for me.”
Kane and Nazar recognize Kantserov’s skills. Kane noted his smooth play and good communication in English. Nazar praised Kantserov for his ability to compete and win puck battles, expressing optimism for their potential together.
Last season, Kantserov achieved his best performance with the KHL’s Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He scored 64 points in 63 games and excelled in playoffs with eight additional points. His record for goal and point totals is unparalleled for players under 22 in the league.
Despite noticing differences between Russian and American leagues, Kantserov finds his prior experience helpful in adapting. He juggles the pressure of expectations with ease, partly due to the discipline he believes is necessary in the NHL.
Blackhawks’ Coach Jeff Blashill expressed admiration for Kantserov’s high hockey IQ. Kantserov shows an effective skill set and plays a complete game. Blashill encourages Kantserov to enjoy playing without overthinking the pressures.
Kantserov nearly scored his NHL debut goal during a preseason game against the Minnesota Wild. A high-level shift saw teammate Bowen Byram mistakenly tap in Kantserov’s pass for a goal, giving Kantserov an assist.
Excitement outweighs nerves for Kantserov, who felt some anxiety before the game but eagerly embraced his debut. Kantserov remarked, “I think everybody’s nervous before the first season, but it’s like great nervous, so I’m excited.”
