Zohran Mamdani Faces Criticism After Staten Island Event and Social Media Post

Mayor Booed at Staten Island Event

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani experienced significant backlash at a pro-police event held on Staten Island. Mayor Mamdani has been under scrutiny, particularly regarding his criticisms and condolences expressed in various social media postings.

Controversial Condolences

Mamdani sparked controversy after he extended condolences for the death of Luis Alberto Lopez Castillo, a man in custody charged with serious crimes including murder, manslaughter, and robbery. His social media post expressed sympathy for Castillo, leading to criticism that he showed more compassion for the alleged criminal rather than the victim, 26-year-old Ron Marte, a man with special needs who was murdered.

Mamdani posted: “A person in City custody died yesterday evening following a court appearance in Queens.”

The mayor mentioned that Department of Correction staff performed CPR on the detainee until emergency services arrived, but many criticized Mamdani for not offering more information about the crimes Castillo was charged with.

Critics Respond

Fox Business anchor David Asman and others criticized Mamdani’s approach, suggesting that he should show sympathy for the victims instead of the criminals. Jewish advocacy group StopAntisemitism and other social media users reiterated similar sentiments.

Benny Polatseck, a former digital producer for former NYC Mayor Eric Adams, asked why Mamdani did not post tweets mourning Marte, highlighting a lack of empathy for victims.

Mamdani’s Policies and Efforts

Mamdani has focused on improving safety and conditions within the jail system. His initiatives have included ending 12-hour shifts for correctional staff, ensuring different age groups are housed separately, and a commitment to closing Rikers Island by moving towards borough-based jails.

His administration has also opened specialized medical units at Bellevue Hospital.

While Mamdani’s efforts have received support from some quarters, critics argue the closing of Rikers Island could result in fewer jail cells, complicating crime resolution.
