Chicago Bears’ Quarterback Concerns After Loss to Vikings

The Chicago Bears experienced a disappointing setback in their Week 2 home opener, losing 9-3 to the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback Caleb Williams left the game due to an injury during the fourth quarter, intensifying the Bears’ struggles. Williams sustained a non-contact injury to his right hamstring and remained on the field for several moments before being taken away by a cart, worrying Bears fans.

In the game, Williams completed 15 out of 26 passes for 138 yards without any touchdowns. The Vikings’ defense applied pressure, sacking him three times and intercepting one of his throws before he left the field. Backup quarterback Tyson Bagent stepped in but failed to secure a late-game comeback for the Bears.

It looked bad, but I’m told that there is optimism that it is not a severe injury.

Following the game, the focus shifted to Williams’ injury. NBC Sports’ Mike Florio shared an update before NBC’s “Sunday Night Football,” indicating a hopeful outlook on the severity of Williams’ condition. Florio noted the potential for a minor Grade 1 hamstring strain, the least severe form, pending an MRI evaluation. He reported that Williams is positive about his recovery process.

Williams had previously encountered a left hamstring issue while playing for the USC Trojans in college. A Grade 1 strain typically requires up to three weeks for recovery, which could mean Williams might return next month. However, any more severe injury could severely impact the Bears’ season.

Williams suffered the injury in the fourth quarter when Vikings defender Andrew Van Ginkel attempted to tackle him. Van Ginkel described the incident, expressing his concern for Williams’ well-being.

Footage from ESPN’s “SportsCenter” portrayed Williams in pain following his fall, which was a rare occurrence given his previous durability in the league. Bears fans had high hopes this season, especially after Williams’ performance in a significant win against the Carolina Panthers during Week 1, suggesting he might be in the conversation for MVP.

The team’s prospects significantly rely on Williams, and his absence for more than three weeks could derail their early season ambitions. Despite this, the Bears have strong rushing options with Kyle Monangai and D’Andre Swift, which may help offset Williams’ time away. Bagent’s role as the interim quarterback becomes vital during this period.

The Bears are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Eagles on “Monday Night Football” on Monday, September 28, at 8:15 p.m. ET.
