Ethics Complaint Against Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert Sparks Controversy

Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert has responded to allegations outlined in a House Ethics Committee complaint, which accused her of sexual involvement with members of her staff. Boebert’s office communicated through an email to Newsweek, stating that these claims are entirely false and politically motivated. The spokesperson described them as a stunt intended to distort the ethics process and smear her reputation.

The complaint, signed under penalty of perjury and filed by David Wheeler, a journalist and political activist, accuses Boebert of engaging in sexual relations with three staff members and allegedly paying $200,000 in hush money to one of them. Wheeler is affiliated with American Muckrackers, a Democratic Super PAC.

Boebert, who recently finalized her divorce due to irreconcilable differences, is a notable Republican figure. This year, she sided with Democrats in subpoenaing Attorney General Pam Bondi over the Epstein files release and backed fellow Representative Thomas Massie’s reelection.

Her family life has also been under scrutiny, as her son faced legal issues in August, being charged with five felony counts, including sexual exploitation of a child and contributing to juvenile delinquency. Boebert expressed concern and prayers for those affected by these events.

Wheeler criticized Boebert, accusing her of employing a denial strategy typical of political maneuvering to redirect the accusations towards him. He claimed that Boebert and her family have a history of deceit and legal infractions.

Wheeler mentioned unverified past allegations regarding Boebert, including supposed affairs and substance use, claiming evidence exists within public records. He accused her of failing to follow through with a threat to sue him, while he himself took legal action against her for defamation. He stated that a judge acknowledged defamation against him.

Wheeler emphasized that the House Ethics Committee has the authority to investigate and subpoena, suggesting that financial records, communications, and testimonies would substantiate the complaints. He maintained that Boebert’s denials will likely serve against her in an inquiry.

The Ethics Committee will assess the validity of the complaint and determine subsequent actions. Wheeler urged a thorough investigation into the allegations, but a timeline for proceedings remains uncertain.

Newsweek’s editors Daniel Orton and Cristina Diciu were contacted for comment on this story. Newsweek has reached out to the House Ethics Committee for further remarks.
