Mike Tomlin Joins NBC as NFL Analyst; Critiques Tua Tagovailoa Ahead of Steelers vs. Falcons Clash

Mike Tomlin, who has been the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for many years, has begun his new role as an NFL analyst with NBC Sports.

Following the season-opening game between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks on Wednesday night, Tomlin shared his thoughts on the Steelers’ Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons, who will be visiting.

Tomlin expressed strong views about Tua Tagovailoa, who has recently been named as the starting quarterback for the Falcons.

“It’s less about Aaron [Rodgers] for me, and it’s more about the quarterback on the other side [Tua Tagovailoa]. His last visit to Pittsburgh didn’t go well. I was in the stadium that day. They lost. He got benched,” Tomlin commented.

Tagovailoa’s time with the Miami Dolphins ended after a Week 15 game in Pittsburgh last year. He managed 253 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 28-15 defeat to the Steelers. This performance led to him being benched for the final stretch of the season, with Quinn Ewers taking over as quarterback.

Despite the challenges of the previous year, Tagovailoa is optimistic about his fresh start with the Falcons. He acknowledges the shortcomings in his performance last season.

“It’s not something that I take for granted,” Tagovailoa said in a statement to YahooSports earlier this week. “There are many areas I think I could have improved. I turned the ball over and could have played better. My decision-making last year wasn’t good.”

The game between the Falcons and Steelers is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
