Nithya Raman’s Political Journey: A Rising Force in Los Angeles

On a pivotal June night, Nithya Raman stood before her supporters at a bustling brewery in downtown Los Angeles. Despite being outspent by her political opponents and mocked by online detractors, her persistence was undeniable. Early results in the mayoral race placed her third, behind incumbent Karen Bass and reality TV figure Spencer Pratt. Despite seeming resigned to a potential defeat, Raman thanked her supporters for their contributions to her campaign.

“We may not get an answer we like,” Raman stated, “but nobody can take away what all of us have built together.”

After her brief address, she joined the dance floor, perhaps to escape the weight of the moment. Yet, there was an underlying confidence. As more votes were tallied, Raman surpassed Pratt to secure a place in the November runoff against Bass. Her decision to enter the race surprised the Los Angeles political scene and received backlash for challenging Bass, an ally she previously endorsed.

Despite the odds, Raman’s campaign gained momentum. She secured key endorsements from the L.A. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and Unite Here Local 11, a major union for hospitality workers. These endorsements promised robust voter outreach, enhancing her campaign’s credibility and reach. Although the DSA had endorsed her City Council campaigns, their support for her mayoral bid was not initially assured due to differing views on various issues.

Unite Here’s endorsement further strengthened Raman’s presence. Their support provided working-class legitimacy, crucial for expanding her voter base. Still, Raman’s endorsement challenges mirrored her previous campaigns. Critics underestimated her, yet she consistently prevailed against adversity.

Raman emerged politically in 2020, challenging the establishment by defeating incumbent David Ryu, marking a significant political upset. Despite leaked discussions among city council members plotting against her, she was reelected in 2024. A censure from DSA-LA for her endorsement by a pro-Israel group posed minimal impact on her influence.

Financial constraints didn’t deter her, even when she underperformed in debates against Bass and Pratt. Her democratic socialist counterparts endorsed Bass, but Raman’s campaign gained momentum, capitalizing on Bass’s missteps, such as her handling of the Lineage warehouse fire.

Raman faces formidable challenges. Bass, a seasoned politician, presents stiff competition. Raman needs strong performances in key regions. While her leftist affiliations draw criticism, her political record shows pragmatic decision-making. Spencer Pratt’s campaign criticisms and his voter base’s undecided support also pose potential obstacles.

Raman anticipated these challenges, driven by a strong grassroots movement. Her father, Venkit, humorously referenced her career path, contrasting with typical Indian immigrant aspirations. Notably, her name, Nithya Varsha, translates to “forever monsoon” in Sanskrit, symbolizing her persistent and life-giving presence.

“A constant, unstoppable force that brings life to the land,” Venkit declared.

The journey ahead for Raman is unclear, yet her determination is unwavering.
