New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s lead over Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman is decreasing, according to a recent poll from Siena University. The poll, released on Wednesday, shows Hochul leading Blakeman 49-39% among likely voters. This marks a decline from a previous June poll, where she led 52-32%.

Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg noted that four years ago, in August 2022, Hochul had a 53-39% lead over former Republican Congressman Lee Zeldin, before ultimately securing a six-point victory.

Bruce Blakeman, currently serving as Nassau County executive, responded to the poll results, stating, “All of the polls we have seen in the last two months have us virtually tied with Kathy Hochul.” He criticized the poll’s accuracy and highlighted the impact of high taxes, rising electricity bills, and increased crime on Hochul’s performance as governor.

Kathy Hochul is desperate for people to believe that she is way ahead, Blakeman said, emphasizing the competitive nature of the race.

The Siena University Poll, conducted from August 3-6, included 811 likely voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4.6 percentage points.

The poll found that voters believe Hochul could manage affordability and housing supply better than Blakeman, with results showing 48-41% on affordability and 51-35% on housing.

Regarding safety and undocumented immigrants, Hochul had a slight lead with 47-44% and 45-44% respectively. Hochul has strong support among Democrats, women, Latino, and Black voters, while Blakeman leads among Republicans and independent voters, as well as in the downstate suburbs.

The poll also explored opinions on the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) for the first time, revealing a negative favorability rating with a 30-47% split. Democrats viewed the group positively, 50-21%, but it received high unfavorable ratings from Republicans and independents, with 82% and 57% respectively.
