Trump and Musk Mobilize for GOP in 2026 Midterms

President Donald Trump intends to actively campaign for Republicans as the party contends with a competitive battle to keep Congress in the 2026 midterm elections. Alongside him, billionaire Elon Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, has started investing significantly in key House and Senate races.

Trump spoke during a White House Rose Garden dinner with Republican lawmakers, announcing plans to participate in around 35 races. He aims to focus on contests crucial to the GOP’s efforts to retain majorities. He emphasized his intention to campaign extensively in the final weeks, particularly in competitive House and Senate races. Trump has been visible campaigning in states such as Texas and South Carolina, with plans for more appearances, including Alaska, where he’ll support Senator Dan Sullivan.

It’s all about 35 races. I’m going to go to every one of those 35 places and we’re going to see if we can get everyone elected,

Trump stated. He highlighted the importance of the last 30 days in ensuring Republican candidates’ elections and acknowledged the effort needed to achieve this goal.

Amid the preparations, Newsweek contacted the Democratic National Committee for comments.

Crucial Races to Watch

Some Senate races have grown increasingly competitive. The Cook Political Report rates six Senate contests as Toss Ups: Alaska, Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Ohio, and Texas. Five of these seats are Republican-held, while Michigan is a Democratic-held open seat. The Democratic Party sees opportunities for gains, particularly with the Cook report moving Iowa and Texas Senate races from Lean Republican to Toss Up status based on polling trends.

Concurrently, Musk’s America PAC is investing in Republican candidates in critical races. The PAC disclosed approximately $800,000 in independent expenditures across pivotal Senate and House contests, marking its inaugural independent spending of the 2026 cycle based on Federal Election Commission filings. America PAC has already accrued roughly $50 million in receipts.

The spending includes six-figure amounts backing Republican Ken Paxton in Texas, as well as Senate races in Alaska and Iowa. Selected House races, including Florida’s U.S. House District 25, saw expenditures as well, with Democratic nominee Jared Moskowitz campaigning there.

Impact on GOP Strategy

The combination of Trump’s campaign appearances and Musk-supported spending indicates a broader Republican strategy to fortify vulnerable candidates before November. The closely-fought midterm elections traditionally reflect public sentiment on the current president, often leading to seat losses for the governing party. Currently, Republicans hold a slim majority, with 218 House seats to Democrats’ 212, and a 53-45 Senate majority.

Texas presents an opportunity for Democrats to flip a traditionally Republican Senate seat. Paxton is contesting against Democrat James Talarico in a race appearing closely matched, driving Trump’s earlier campaign efforts in Texas. Significant Republican resources are expected in the state.

Democrats are also eyeing the Maine Senate race for gains. Republican Senator Susan Collins faces Democratic nominee Troy Jackson, with polls showing a narrow race. Concerns over Trump’s approval and economic issues are propelling Democratic optimism. America PAC investments extend to this Maine Senate race as well.

Former New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu commented on CNN regarding Trump’s campaign commitment. Sununu suggested Trump should focus his efforts strategically, acknowledging logistical challenges in visiting every race.

If he sticks to his wins, and he has had some wins… if he wants to promote those wins to help the Republican Party as a whole, I think that would be a good way to go,

Sununu stated.
