Controversy Surrounds Lane Kiffin’s Recruiting Tactics at LSU

Lane Kiffin has not yet coached a game for LSU, but there is already a call to ban the Tigers from the SEC due to Kiffin’s controversial recruiting methods.

According to ESPN, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has urged SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey to take drastic measures against LSU if the team includes players who were with NFL teams this summer. The SEC introduced a new rule last week barring member schools from signing former NFL players, with severe penalties for violations. These include suspensions for coaches, fines up to 50% of the school’s annual budget, and revoking voting rights for league matters.

In a letter to Sankey, Carr threatened to use all necessary legal means to ensure no SEC teams, especially LSU, play anyone who had NFL ties. Kiffin and LSU reportedly aimed to sign tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive tackle Zxavian Harris, formerly of the Cleveland Browns and New Orleans Saints, respectively.

“College athletics are for college athletes only, and we are grateful the SEC has taken swift action to maintain that standard,” Carr stated through ESPN. “The rules cannot be ignored or twisted to benefit one coach, one institution, or one program, and we refuse to stand by while that happens.”

Multiple local judges have granted temporary restraining orders recently, allowing NFL rookies who failed to secure a 53-man roster spot to return to college for an extra year of eligibility. Carr’s threat presents new challenges for Sankey and the SEC, especially after a Louisiana state judge declared that the SEC cannot penalize any team in the conference for signing a player who had an NFL contract this offseason.

Thomas Castellanos, a former Florida State quarterback who tried out as a wide receiver at the Miami Dolphins’ rookie minicamp, took advantage of this ruling. He signed with Texas Tech after not making an NFL roster this summer.

Several news reports indicate that the SEC has not commented on the judge’s decision or its plans to address the situation involving former NFL players.
