Justin Steele Eyes Cubs Comeback After Injury Setback

Left-handed pitcher Justin Steele has been eagerly anticipating the Chicago Cubs’ series in Arizona. After undergoing elbow surgery in April 2025, Steele faced an additional challenge with a flexor strain this spring, which delayed his recovery. He’s now with the team during their three-game matchup against the Diamondbacks, as he nears a return to major-league play.

Steele reported positive feelings after his first live batting practice last week. He has been consistently throwing catch, feeling no discomfort. Plans are for Steele to throw live batting practice on Tuesday and Friday at the Cubs’ complex in Mesa. He hopes to start a rehab assignment after these sessions. ‘It’s been a long journey and it feels great to be nearing the end,’ Steele stated on Monday. ‘Seeing the team’s performance, the urge to join them is strong.’

Steele is optimistic about pitching for the Cubs this season. ‘Once the setback occurred, we reconsidered what made the most sense. Ultimately, a bullpen role was more practical,’ Steele explained. ‘The timeline wouldn’t allow for stretching out as a starter. Transitioning to the bullpen let me build up quickly.’

Cubs manager Craig Counsell emphasized caution. Steele has not pitched in an official game for almost two years, necessitating a thorough rehab process. Counsell remarked, ‘We need to avoid skipping steps. Steele must experience multiple games in rehab before considering him ready for the majors.’

The possibility of Steele contributing in the postseason is enticing, especially if his short outings prove effective. Steele admitted, ‘I probably pushed too hard, eager to return quickly without skipping necessary steps. Yet, this recovery feels better than before.’ Despite his eagerness, the team remains careful with his progression, even as a reliever.

Right-handed pitcher Ben Brown, dealing with a stress reaction in his neck, is ahead of Steele in recovery. Brown is expected to throw live batting practice on Tuesday. If he feels well, he’ll join the team to initiate a rehab stint back in Chicago.
