Shelley Fabares: A Celebrated Television Icon Remembered

Shelley Fabares, a beloved television actor, passed away at the age of 82. Her family announced her death in Los Angeles, expressing their deep admiration for her qualities of love, strength, laughter, and comfort.

Born in Santa Monica, California, in 1944, Fabares began her acting career in childhood, landing her first television role at ten on ‘The Loretta Young Show.’ Over the years, her talent shone through collaborations with renowned actors like Paul Newman and Frank Sinatra in productions such as ‘Our Town,’ as well as appearances in films like ‘The Girl Rush‘ and ‘Never Say Goodbye.

Fabares’ breakthrough came with ‘The Donna Reed Show,’ where she portrayed Mary Stone from 1958 to 1963. Her role on this show coincided with a successful recording career, including the popular hit ‘Johnny Angel.’

In the 1960s, she notably co-starred in Elvis Presley movies like ‘Girl Happy‘ and ‘Spinout,’ enriching her acting repertoire. Her time on ‘The Donna Reed Show‘ left a lasting impact on her, and she regarded Donna Reed as an extraordinary influence on her life.

Fabares continued to shine in television, with roles like Francine Webster on ‘One Day at a Time,’ and Christine Armstrong on ‘Coach,’ which eventually found its audience despite initial challenges.

Her personal life included two marriages, first to producer Lou Adler, and later to ‘M*A*S*H‘ actor Mike Farrell. Her advocacy for Alzheimer’s awareness was driven by her mother’s struggle with the disease.

In 1999, Fabares faced health challenges, undergoing a liver transplant in 2000. She described the experience as life-changing and thanked Farrell for his unwavering support.

Her family fondly remembers her kindness, loyalty, wit, and courage, cherishing not only her career but her as an exceptional and loving person.
