Fernando Mendoza is experiencing growing pains as a rookie despite being the Las Vegas Raiders’ first overall draft pick. In his second preseason game against the Houston Texans, Mendoza threw an interception early on. Texans linebacker Wade Woodaz intercepted the pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown.
Mendoza’s debut last week was promising. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards, including a touchdown against the Arizona Cardinals, without any interceptions. However, the game against the Texans saw his completion rate fall to just over 50%, and he ended with a passer rating of 42.6 due to the errant throw that led to the score. His evening included a stretch of six consecutive completions followed by two misses, one of which was a dropped pass.
After the interception, Mendoza appeared visibly upset on the sidelines. Teammates, including veteran Maxx Crosby, tried to offer support. Crosby emphasized the importance of resilience, saying, “It’s not gonna be perfect. He’s a rookie. You got to go through some ups and downs as part of the game, and it’s how you respond.”
According to ESPN analyst Troy Aikman, who has experience as a former No. 1 draft pick, the transition from college to the NFL involves adapting to a faster pace and tighter coverage from defenders. He pointed out that Mendoza will need to adjust to these changes throughout his rookie season and learn from each game.
