Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski offered insights on how quarterback Drake Maye might elevate his game in the upcoming NFL season. Following a Super Bowl LXI loss, the Patriots made notable roster changes. They released veteran receiver Stefon Diggs and added AJ Brown, a former Philadelphia Eagles Pro Bowler, to enhance their receiving options.
Gronkowski highlighted Brown’s potential to significantly aid Maye’s development. “Brown reminds me of myself, but as a wide receiver. He’s got a bigger frame and knows how to use it. He can make plays even when covered,” Gronkowski stated in his commendation of Brown.
He emphasized the importance of this pairing. “Drake Maye’s growth may depend on having a talent like AJ Brown available. Maye can now test his ability to place the ball where only Brown can make a play,” Gronkowski explained to Sports Illustrated.
Maye demonstrated substantial progress in his sophomore year. He amassed 4,394 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, alongside eight interceptions. His QBR of 77.1 and a passer rating of 113.5 positioned him at the top among quarterbacks.
AJ Brown, despite facing a challenging season with the Eagles, achieved 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. As he joins New England, he reconnects with former Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel. Playing under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, Gronkowski believes Brown will be effectively utilized in the Patriots’ offense.
The Patriots face stiff competition in the AFC, with teams like the Buffalo Bills led by Josh Allen, the Baltimore Ravens featuring Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes with the Kansas City Chiefs. Yet, a strong partnership between Maye and Brown may enhance the Patriots’ competitiveness more than last season.
