The Supreme Court has once again rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn a jury’s $5 million decision. This verdict found that Trump sexually abused writer E. Jean Carroll at a New York City department store in the 1990s and later defamed her. Trump’s legal team sought to challenge the court’s earlier refusal to hear his appeal, but the justices denied this request along with several others.
Although it is not common for the Supreme Court to grant such petitions, Trump paid the judgment shortly after the petition was dismissed in June. Trump, along with the Justice Department, is also seeking to overturn another Carroll verdict amounting to $83 million. They claim Trump has legal immunity for statements made about Carroll in 2019 while he was serving as president. The court has not yet made a decision on that particular appeal.
E. Jean Carroll, an advice columnist and former TV talk show host, testified in a 2023 trial. She described how a friendly encounter with Trump in the 1990s escalated into a violent incident in the dressing room of Bergdorf Goodman, a luxury store near Trump Tower in Manhattan. A jury concluded that Trump defamed Carroll by denying her accusations in 2022. Trump has denied any wrongdoing in this case.
