Islam Makhachev Contemplates Next Opponent After UFC 330 Victory

Islam Makhachev successfully defended his UFC Welterweight Championship against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. The fight concluded with a unanimous decision from the judges, scoring 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in Makhachev’s favor. This win prompted immediate speculation about his next opponent.

Carlos Prates is keen to challenge Makhachev. Following the event in Philadelphia, a video emerged showing Prates declaring his intention to defeat Makhachev and take the belt to Brazil. Prates stated, “I will knock you out, bro. I will knock you out. I will bring that belt to Brazil. The first welterweight champion from Brazil.”

Prates is currently on a three-fight winning streak. His latest victory was a third-round TKO against Jack Della Maddalena during May’s UFC Fight Night in Perth, Australia. However, Prates had previously lost to Machado Garry in April by unanimous decision.

Despite the past setback, Prates (24-7-0) ranks first among welterweights in the Meta UFC Rankings. This position makes him a notable candidate for Makhachev’s next fight. Prates has secured 19 knockouts in his career, showing confidence in his ability to do the same to Makhachev.

Some analysts feel Makhachev might easily overcome Prates due to the latter’s inferior wrestling skills compared to Machado Garry. Makhachev excels as a grappler with multiple submission victories in his record. Prates might find defending against takedowns challenging.

After his latest victory, Makhachev expressed thoughts on potential challengers. He mentioned Prates as a deserving opponent because of his active status, unlike others like Shavkat or Morales.

Makhachev, at 34, also indicated a desire to compete again soon due to his age. This increases the likelihood that Prates will be his next challenger if arrangers finalize the match.
