Scottie Scheffler’s Victory at FedEx St. Jude Championship

Scottie Scheffler showcased his skill at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, triumphing by eight strokes ahead of Si Woo Kim. This win comes as a relief for Scheffler after enduring five runner-up finishes this season. While speaking to CBS Sports’ Amanda Balionis, he expressed his satisfaction with the victory.

“I’ve had some close calls this year. I feel like I kept saying at the end of each tournament, ‘Man, it feels like I’m playing pretty good, just little things aren’t going my way,'” Scheffler remarked. Despite an unexpected challenge when a shot hit a sprinkler and ended up in water, he maintained focus and determination.

“Going into today, I just wanted to try to do my best, try and execute,” he said. “Did a good job of staying in it and bouncing back … Was able to kind of relax.”

This victory marks Scheffler’s first since the American Express Golf Tournament in January, which was the start of his season. He has consistently come in second at the 3M Open, Cadillac Championship, RBC Heritage, Travelers Championship, and The Masters this year.

Balionis noted that statistically, this has been Scheffler’s finest season. She asked him what he is most proud of about his performance. “I think I’ve been really consistent. … Outside of Amex, I felt like I didn’t play as good early in the year as I could have. I felt like I was battling my swing a little bit. But just staying consistent, staying in it each week. That’s what I’m most proud of I think, is just having the ability to fight and claw my way through things”, he shared.

He added, “It’s nice to be able to pay it off with a win this week. Statistics are one thing, but being able to win golf tournaments is another.” This victory not only brought him his second win of the season but also his 21st career PGA Tour win. This achievement places him as the third-youngest golfer to secure 21 wins, just behind Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

The triumph in Memphis has propelled Scheffler to the top of the FedEx Cup standings. Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young follow in second and third places, trailing by 1,447 and 1,690 points, respectively.

This success indicates Scheffler may have rediscovered his winning momentum after several near-misses this season. His next target is the BMW Championship at the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri.
