An unusual situation at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport involved two planes both identified as American Airlines flight 2482. One was arriving from Chicago, while the other was preparing for departure. An alert air traffic controller noticed the problem and took prompt action to clarify the situation.

The controller identified the planes as ‘American 2482 departure’ and ‘American 2482 arrival’ to avoid any confusion. This quick thinking ensured that both aircraft landed and took off without issue. He expressed surprise, stating, ‘I’ve been working air traffic for 25 years — I’ve never seen two aircraft pretty much emerge with the same call sign.’

The Federal Aviation Administration is currently investigating the incident, as confirmed by a statement from the agency. The confusion arose due to a delayed arrival where a different aircraft assumed the same call sign for subsequent scheduled flights to Chicago.

An American Airlines spokesperson mentioned the delay of the incoming flight from Chicago. Upon landing, the plane was to head back to Chicago, necessitating a substitute aircraft with the identical call sign.

Despite the potential for error, the controller’s decisive action averted any complications, demonstrating the importance of vigilance in air traffic management.
