Tony Romo’s position with CBS is uncertain. CBS Sports President, David Berson, mentioned at “NFL on CBS” Media Day that there is no fixed timeline or decision after Romo’s recent OWI (Operating While Intoxicated) arrest. Romo has been placed on indefinite leave.

Romo was arrested in Wisconsin by the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office after showing signs of impairment while driving home from a golf event. Despite these events, no resolution has been announced regarding his role with CBS.

“It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing,” Berson stated. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.” He asked for understanding, noting that it is a personal and legal issue for Romo.

When asked why Romo was placed on leave, Berson emphasized the importance of CBS’s image and brand. The network wants to focus on delivering quality sports presentations.

Romo faces multiple charges, including operating while intoxicated, having an open bottle of alcohol in his vehicle, and unsafe passing. This comes in the midst of a significant contract with CBS. Romo is in a 10-year, $180 million agreement, with $72 million remaining on the deal.

Reports suggest Romo’s future with CBS might be at risk even beyond his leave. There were already discussions about his performance with co-announcer Jim Nantz and whether he will continue in his role after the 2026 season. CBS is set to broadcast the Super Bowl in 2028.

Additionally, Romo’s contract contains a morals clause. CBS might use this to terminate his role due to the arrest. Romo’s legal team would likely contest this, citing the substantial money still owed under his contract.

Romo is scheduled to appear in court on September 21, which is eight days after CBS Sports begins its NFL broadcasts. The situation continues to unfold as all parties await the legal outcome.
