Sean Payton Criticizes TV Analyst for Misjudging Broncos Quarterback Bo Nix

Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton is known for having little patience for careless sports TV analysis, especially when it comes from former NFL players who should understand what factors into quarterback evaluation. Recently, Geoff Schwartz, a former offensive lineman turned TV analyst, mischaracterized Bo Nix on national television, prompting Payton to respond directly.

During a debate on “First Things First,” Schwartz claimed that Nix hasn’t evolved much since his college days. Schwartz stated, “I do think he just is what he is at this point. He looks like the same quarterback he was in college. He’s consistent. He’s not gonna make mistakes. But he’s not gonna push the ball down the field all that often.”

“Nix has thrown the most touchdown passes of 20-plus air yards in the NFL since the start of the 2024 season, with 19 including the postseason.”

This fact made Schwartz’s assessment hard to defend. Nix is still developing, and discussions about his long-term potential are valid. However, Schwartz’s claim that Nix doesn’t push the ball downfield fails to consider how the Denver Broncos have utilized him on the field.

Payton quickly addressed Schwartz’s comments. He stated, “Always easy to tell who works at it and who doesn’t,” showcasing his dissatisfaction with Schwartz’s analysis.

Former players are typically brought on as analysts to provide insight beyond typical debate-show rhetoric. This is why Schwartz’s statements were notable. Nix’s ability to make deep passes isn’t an isolated statistic; it challenges Schwartz’s entire premise. While it’s reasonable to discuss any limitations Nix might have, portraying him as a quarterback who rarely attacks downfield isn’t backed by the data.

In this instance, Schwartz’s argument didn’t hold up under scrutiny.
