Tragic Incident Involving Decorated Florida Deputy

A Florida sheriff’s deputy, celebrated for his bravery and dedication, committed a tragic act that ended in death for both himself and a former girlfriend. If you or anyone you know is considering suicide, please contact the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988 or 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Friends have identified the victim as Mandy Fackler, a mother of two children aged 12 and 9. Deputy Troy Savetz, involved with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office for 14 years, was part of the marine unit. According to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri, Savetz and Fackler had an unstable relationship.

The incident unfolded when Savetz waited outside Fackler’s home after she returned from the beach with her children around 5:30 p.m. Brandishing a gun, he confronted her about a television and took her phone when she attempted to call 911. With bravery, Fackler instructed her children to go inside, and they complied, not seeing their mother again.

Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco praised the children for their composure in contacting 911, providing vital information to identify Savetz. Responding officers found the mother’s vehicle with the door open but no sign of her.

Using K-9 units, drones, and aviation teams, authorities located the vehicle in Spring Hill about 90 minutes later. The drone revealed two people inside. On foot, officers discovered both Savetz and Fackler deceased. Nocco stated the children remained unharmed and were now with their biological father.

Sheriff Nocco commended the children’s courage and assured them that their mother would be proud. He emphasized the community’s support and urged the children to know the importance of their actions during such a critical moment.

Troy Savetz had been publicly recognized for previous acts of heroism. He received a 2014 award for preventing a 24-year-old from jumping off a bridge, earning praise from the Tampa Bay Rays and recognition at local events. In 2018, his adoption of a pot-bellied pig during duty led to his role as an ambassador for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Despite his prior commendations, Sheriff Gualtieri made it clear that Savetz’s criminal actions stripped him of his law enforcement identity, marking him as a criminal instead.
