An Ontario family faces ongoing challenges after their baby was diagnosed with a rare medical condition. Levi, the infant son of Jenny Wilson and Logan Cook, developed symptoms just eight weeks after birth that drastically altered their lives.

Initially, Jenny noticed subtle changes in Levi’s behavior, including fatigue and reduced milk intake. Despite being breastfed, Levi appeared tired and cried when laid down to sleep. At first, Jenny suspected a minor issue but soon observed more concerning symptoms. Levi vomited, made grunting noises, and strangely felt colder instead of feverish. His stomach felt unusually hard, raising alarms for Jenny.

Jenny followed her instincts and sought hospital care, despite doubts that anything serious was wrong. Doctors diagnosed Levi with midgut volvulus. This condition involves twisting of the intestine, creating a life-threatening block of blood flow. Usually linked to congenital intestinal malrotation, the condition required immediate surgical intervention.

Levi underwent several surgeries with high risks. The outcome was every parent’s nightmare; a substantial portion of Levi’s intestine had to be removed. Surgeons removed 90 percent during the third operation, leaving Levi needing more surgeries to adjust his remaining intestine. Jenny faced the heartbreak of losing the ability to breastfeed Levi due to his medical needs.

After three months in the hospital, Levi returned home. Living with short bowel syndrome, Levi relies on intravenous nutrition for most of the day. He cannot enjoy simple activities like swimming due to the risks associated with his condition including a colostomy bag. Potential fevers could lead to severe complications such as bloodstream infections.

Jenny continued to reflect on how life has changed. She openly shares on Instagram about mourning the life they expected but emphasizing gratitude for Levi’s survival. Judgment often accompanies the family’s adaptation to Levi’s constraints, from what he cannot consume to activities he must avoid.
