Washington Post opinion editor Adam O’Neal announced his departure from the paper on Friday after about a year in his role. In a memo to staff, O’Neal stated, “I have decided to leave The Washington Post. My last day will be August 31.”
O’Neal joined the Washington Post to lead its opinion section and ushered in significant changes during his tenure. He noted that the team embraced a mission of supporting free markets and personal freedoms, making their work more relevant and engaging for a wide audience. He highlighted improvements in page views and the time readers spent on the site as evidence of their success.
“I want to thank Jeff Bezos, Jeff D’Onofrio, and the entire leadership team,” O’Neal said. “Working with the Post Opinions team has been an honor.”
Jeff D’Onofrio, the acting CEO and publisher of The Washington Post, expressed gratitude to O’Neal. He credited him with making the opinion section more balanced and accessible, and he indicated that a leadership transition would be underway.
A source familiar with O’Neal’s exit mentioned that the Post’s leadership was surprised by his decision, with no apparent tensions between O’Neal and Jeff Bezos. During an all-hands meeting, O’Neal shared that it was a personal decision and noted the surprise among staff.
O’Neal did not respond immediately to requests for comment.
His role at The Post began in July after previously working as a correspondent for The Economist and editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal. He was tasked with promoting personal liberties and free markets on the editorial pages, a directive from owner Jeff Bezos. This mission led to backlash and contributed to the departure of O’Neal’s predecessor, David Shipley.
In an early interview, O’Neal acknowledged the responsibility to navigate a primarily liberal readership. He saw an opportunity to expand the paper’s reach and rebuild trust among those skeptical of The Post and mainstream media. To achieve this, he aimed to hire individuals with diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
