Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., has responded to President Donald Trump’s recent threat to withdraw the nomination of Todd Blanche as Attorney General. Tillis blames the White House for the stalled confirmation process, emphasizing the need for Trump to honor a prior commitment to secure his vote. Tillis commented, “That’s his prerogative,” regarding Trump’s threat.

Trump had criticized both Tillis and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, on Truth Social, accusing them of obstructing Blanche’s nomination. He also hinted at withdrawing Blanche’s nomination until the two senators leave office next year.

Tillis maintains negotiations are ongoing and places responsibility on the administration. Tillis withheld support for Blanche until two conditions are met: eliminating a nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization fund, and amending the audit immunity language in Trump’s settlement agreement.

Tillis stated, “The best thing is, take the win, get Blanche confirmed and get this agreement out of the way.”

He stressed that Blanche is not at fault, saying Blanche was forthright during his confirmation process. Tillis suggested the issue lies with one of Trump’s advisors and called for accountability.

Looking ahead, Tillis doubts the Senate will be more accepting of Blanche next year. He noted the political landscape with Republicans having more seats in danger.

President Trump could keep Blanche as acting attorney general for months despite possibly withdrawing the nomination. The Federal Vacancies Reform Act permits acting officials to serve for 210 days, and withdrawal would reset this period. If withdrawn, Blanche could serve until late February.

Tillis remains open to negotiations, saying, “I’m not a no on Blanche.” He remarked, “In this place, nothing’s ever as good or as bad as it seems, so we’re continuing to negotiate.”
