In Santa Clara, Coach Kyle Shanahan joined general manager John Lynch on the practice field to watch the San Francisco 49ers for 30 minutes. This marked his first appearance at training camp after a car crash left him with a concussion and other injuries. “I know he can’t stay away,” said linebacker Fred Warner. Shanahan, temporarily sidelined after the July 14 accident in Palo Alto, is recovering from broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and concussion symptoms.
Despite his limited presence, the 49ers are proceeding under assistant head coach Chris Foerster. Shanahan’s brief visit included interactions with Warner, Kyle Juszczyk, Christian McCaffrey, and Dre Greenlaw. Shanahan was visibly injured with a cast, sunglasses, and a new mustache. Yet, his commitment remains strong. “It’s going to be hard for him to get his rest. He’s not that type of person,” tackle Trent Williams noted.
Foerster, assisted by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer, has smoothly taken on interim leadership duties. The team continues on course with pre-established plans, and Foerster only makes minor adjustments, such as handling penalties. With over three decades in the NFL since starting as an assistant in Minnesota in 1993, Foerster’s transition has been seamless. Williams expressed pride in Foerster’s role, acknowledging their long history together.
Foerster’s relationship with Shanahan dates back to their time in Washington together. Despite challenges, including Foerster’s resignation in Miami in 2017, Shanahan and the 49ers organization provided him with a second chance. “This organization did some things for me and pulled me in at a time in my life when nobody would really want to be with me,” Foerster said, highlighting Shanahan’s importance in his career.
Star defensive end Nick Bosa also returned, participating in individual drills after his recovery from a torn ACL in Week 3 last season. “Bosa looks better than he did before he got hurt,” added Williams.
Additional notes include OL Vederian Lowe’s early exit due to an ankle injury, CB Nate Hobbs being absent from practice, and the signing of DT Kevin Givens after Evan Anderson’s release. Connor Colby is in line for the starting left guard position following a promising rookie year.
