Ted Danson, famous for his role as Sam Malone, offered insights into his personal life during the final days of the hit sitcom ‘Cheers’. In his podcast, ‘Where Everybody Knows Your Name’, the actor, now 78, shared candid reflections on his struggles during that period.
Discussing what life was like at the time, Danson said, “I had messed up my life so much that I didn’t even realize ‘Cheers’ was over.” The Emmy Award-winning actor noted that his personal disarray often overshadowed his work.
Personal Growth and Self-Discovery
During his podcast, Danson admitted to feeling disconnected from himself during the last year of ‘Cheers’. He revealed driving to Long Beach to meet his mentor, describing him as “amazing” and influential in providing “a whole different kind of therapy spirituality” experience.
Danson stated, “I wanted to stop being a liar. I wanted to be emotionally mature. I wanted to change.” The period marked a significant shift for Danson as he worked to improve himself emotionally.
Transitioning from ‘Cheers’ to New Ventures
When asked about being typecast post-‘Cheers’, Danson indicated that his personal challenges made the transition less daunting. “The transition was easy because I blew my personal life up so badly,” he reflected, noting it took months to even notice the show’s conclusion.
Danson’s departure from ‘Cheers’, which concluded after 11 successful seasons, stemmed from a desire to explore other acting opportunities. This decision led him to discover his versatility as an actor.
Diversifying Acting Roles
After ‘Cheers’, Danson appeared in ‘Becker’, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, and ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’. His role in ‘The Good Place’ introduced him to a new audience, showcasing his adaptability.
Currently, Danson stars in the Netflix series ‘Man on the Inside’. The show portrays a retired professor who becomes an undercover spy in a nursing home. “There’s something inherently funny about a 76-year-old man who is a retired college professor,” Danson explained in a 2024 interview with People.
