The Southeastern Conference (SEC) is preparing for an important year in college football. It has been three years since the conference last secured a national championship. This has caused frustration among fans. They aim to reaffirm the SEC’s status as a leading conference.

The SEC has historically dominated college football. However, the Big Ten has recently outperformed it. The SEC commissioner, Greg Sankey, addressed these concerns at the SEC Football Media Day in Tampa on July 20, 2026. Missouri’s coach, Eli Drinkwitz, recently criticized Big Ten’s scheduling, adding to the ongoing debates.

As a supporter of the SEC, particularly the Florida Gators, I acknowledge the challenges the conference currently faces. Despite the Big Ten’s recent success, figures like Alabama coach Nick Saban argue that the SEC still possesses greater depth and talent. Recruiting rankings and NFL Draft statistics support this claim. Yet, the gap is narrowing.

Nevertheless, perceptions matter in college football. The SEC has not progressed in the College Football Playoff (CFP) recently, failing to win a national title or defeat Power 4 programs from outside their conference. Last year, Alabama and Ole Miss only managed intraconference victories.

Head Coach Kirby Smart of the Georgia Bulldogs addressed these challenges during a press conference at the 2025 SEC Football Media Days in Atlanta. He recognized that to silence doubters, the SEC must improve its Playoff performances.

While some suggest the SEC is losing its edge, I believe it can regain its past dominance. The league must adapt to the evolving talent landscape driven by NIL and the transfer portal. Success in future Playoff games will be crucial to restoring the SEC’s reputation. Action, not talk, will determine their return to the top.
