Federal Grant Cancellations Linked to Politics

Federal Grant Cancellations Political Bias

The Trump administration recently faced scrutiny over the cancellation of federal green grants, openly admitting they were influenced by political factors. A court filing by Department of Energy (DOE) lawyer Jeff Novak revealed that the process was particularly selective.

Details From the Court Filing

Novak stated that the DOE initially compiled a list of 624 grants for potential cancellation. The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) opted to include 284 of these grants in the cancellation list. All but one of the selected grants were linked to states with two Democratic senators and that voted for then-Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024.

Political Implications

The filing emphasized that the inclusion of grants in the cancellation list was exclusively based on the political affiliation of the recipient states. There were no programmatic, statutory, cost-reduction, or performance-based reasons for the cancellations. The remaining 340 grants have not been canceled.

The Original Proposal

Importantly, Novak noted that for the initial list of 624 proposed cancellations by the DOE, the political identity of the states did not influence the decision.
