The ‘Today’ show is strengthening its security after an intruder verbally attacked co-host Craig Melvin. The incident led to the suspect facing hate crime charges.

An email sent to Hollywood PR firms, initially published by Variety, shared updates about tighter security protocols. These changes include limiting the number of guests’ companions to two individuals during studio access. Companions may include stylists, spokespersons, or other support personnel.

The event in question involved Andrew Truelove, a 41-year-old Virginia native, allegedly sneaking into NBC’s restricted area at Rockefeller Center. He reportedly aimed to find Al Roker but encountered Melvin instead, directing racial slurs at him before being apprehended by authorities.

NBC released a statement emphasizing their commitment to employee and guest safety. They promised to review security measures to ensure a safe studio environment. The suspect loitered outside the studio windows for over 30 minutes on the morning of July 16, 2026.

Truelove’s criminal history includes convictions in Virginia, over a dozen pending charges in New York, and previous involvement in crimes like attempted kidnapping and misdemeanors. His recent arraignment resulted in a not guilty plea, and a subsequent hearing has been scheduled.

Previously, Truelove faced accusations of attempted abduction in Virginia, resulting in a conviction and a prison sentence with a probationary period. A psychiatrist reported Truelove’s bipolar disorder but noted his discontinuation of medication due to side effects.

Other charges included trespassing, bomb threats, property destruction, and probation violations. In 2023, following his probation completion, Truelove moved to Southern California, where his struggle with homelessness was documented in the Los Angeles Times.
