According to Maine law, Platner has until July 13 to withdraw if Democrats are to replace him on the November ballot. A new nominee must be chosen by July 27 if Platner steps aside.

Jackson’s Statement and Background

Troy Jackson, who recently lost the Democratic gubernatorial primary, filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. He condemned the allegations against Platner and expressed indecision about pursuing the nomination, citing overwhelming support and encouragement.

“I’m deeply humbled by the outpouring of support,” Jackson stated. “I’m weighing the best path to support our progressive movement and working-class revolution in Maine.”

Progressive Campaign Alignment

Jackson and Platner both ran progressive campaigns and appeared together at events during the 2026 election cycle, earning backing from Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Shift in Endorsements

Following the allegations, Our Revolution, a political organization founded by Sanders, withdrew its endorsement of Platner in favor of Jackson. The group emphasized the urgency of getting a real progressive on the ballot.

“We have days to ensure a real progressive is on this ballot,” said Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese. “We refuse to let the Democratic establishment provide a corporate placeholder.”

Jackson’s Ties to Sanders

Jackson has a longstanding relationship with Sanders, being one of the few to endorse him over Hillary Clinton during the 2016 primary. Sanders later endorsed Jackson’s gubernatorial campaign.

Jackson’s Achievements and Platform

Jackson, a fifth-generation logger, served over two decades in the Maine Legislature. His gubernatorial platform included universal child care, Medicare for all, and a Department of Affordable Housing, securing endorsements from many labor unions.

Despite the progressive nature of his politics, Jackson has won elections in Republican-dominated regions. He attributes his success to focusing on economic issues rather than party labels.
