MLB Clears Dr. Neal ElAttrache of Wrongdoing

Major League Baseball has concluded its inquiry into Dr. Neal ElAttrache of the Los Angeles Dodgers concerning his alleged involvement in supporting performance-enhancing drug use. The investigation was prompted by recent disclosures that he endorsed such drug use for U.F.C. star Conor McGregor to aid in healing a severe leg injury.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, MLB’s commissioner’s office announced that investigators had discussed the situation with Dr. ElAttrache and found no issues with his treatment of players or his compliance with the league’s antidrug regulations. “We do not have any concerns regarding Dr. ElAttrache’s treatment of M.L.B. players, or his adherence to the sport’s antidoping program. We consider this matter closed,” the statement read.

Dr. ElAttrache remains a leading figure in sports medicine, holding positions with both the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Rams. He has treated notable athletes, including Bryce Harper and Shohei Ohtani. His high-profile status comes partly from his extensive experience and involvement with 18 of the 29 baseball players who have secured Cy Young or Most Valuable Player Awards in the past decade.

The swift resolution follows reports from The New York Times regarding Dr. ElAttrache’s support for McGregor’s requested exemption to use banned substances post-injury. Some antidoping officials regarded this move as an attempt to misuse loopholes in the drug-testing system. Experts noted their surprise at Dr. ElAttrache’s endorsement, indicating a lack of precedent for such exemptions.

In light of these allegations, MLB began examining the circumstances surrounding Dr. ElAttrache’s backing of the exemption to ensure he had not advocated the use of illegal drugs within baseball. The commissioner’s office assured that their due diligence was taken seriously.

While Major League Baseball has wrapped up its investigation, the National Football League has yet to comment on whether it will conduct its own review of Dr. ElAttrache.
