Severe Weather Affects Large Portions of the U.S.

More than 250 storms have delivered heavy rain, severe flooding, and high winds across the United States overnight. The threat of adverse weather conditions is expected to persist into Tuesday.

Flooding and Tornadoes

In Kentucky, emergency workers navigated knee-deep floodwaters to rescue stranded motorists. Similar scenes unfolded in New Jersey, where rising water levels left vehicles immobilized. A suspected tornado in Virginia caused further havoc, felling trees and leaving roads impassable, while thousands in the Southeast lost power due to downed lines.

Extreme Weather Nationwide

Elsewhere, 100 mph winds in Colorado triggered dust storms, impacting a vast swath of the country. Weather conditions also interrupted a Monday evening World Cup game in Philadelphia due to lightning reports. New York City faced heavy rain as the weather chaos unfolded.

Flight Disruptions

Airports from Boston to Washington DC enforced ground stops on Monday, causing 10,000 flight disruptions at the start of the week. As of Tuesday morning, the U.S. reported 851 delays and 175 cancellations. Major airports like JFK, LaGuardia, Philadelphia International, and Ronald Reagan Washington National faced significant challenges due to ongoing storms and reduced visibility, according to FlightAware.

Ongoing Storm Risks

On Tuesday, nearly 12 million people remain at risk for further storms. The mid-Atlantic, spanning eastern North Carolina to southeastern Virginia and southern Maryland, faces a high likelihood of damaging winds and possible tornadoes. Flash flood warnings cover areas from Norfolk, Virginia, to West Virginia, with potential rainfall of 2-4 inches.

The western High Plains to the central Plains, including parts of Wyoming and Colorado, braced for large hail over 2 inches wide, destructive winds, and potential tornadoes. This severe weather threat extends into Wednesday, particularly affecting eastern Wyoming to New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle.

Intense Heat Conditions

The West Coast, under heat alerts from Louisiana to the Pacific Northwest, sees 30 million people under warnings. Record high temperatures are expected, with Las Vegas reaching up to 110°F, Phoenix 111°F, Albuquerque 100°F, and Lubbock 101°F. Humidity along the Gulf Coast could push heat indices even higher. This extreme heat is likely to persist through the week.

As the West begins to cool, the East is expected to heat up. The late week and weekend could bring triple-digit temperatures to the southern Plains, Southeast, and parts of northern Florida.
